As has been noted before within the pages of CMM, second to market is often not a bad place to be. You pick up on your competitors’ teething problems, learn from their mistakes and ultimately improve upon their design. Kawasaki did just this with its Z1 when the company aced Honda’s CB750/4. Just a few years down the line Suzuki did exactly the same with its sublime GS750. Smoother, more refined, less bulky and better handling than either; it set new standards. Of course it wasn’t long before the company had its eye on the top prize in the form of the one litre crown and with the launch of the GS1000 in 1978 Suzuki arguably aced them all.
